The Annual Collegiate Alternative
Dispute Resolution Competition

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is a phrase that describes ways of resolving disputes outside of court. ADR can mean many things, but usually involves some form of mediation, arbitration, and settlement negotiations. The Annual Collegiate ADR Competition was created to promote greater interest among college students in legal negotiations. Specifically, our aim was to provide a forum for college students to learn about and practice ADR techniques. We hope to inspire prospective law students to begin thinking of ADR as a viable option to resolving disputes between people. Generally, people think of litigation as the only way of resolving issues between people, and do not know about the power of mediation, arbitration, or negotiations. A secondary aim of our competition is to leave a lasting impression among competitors such that they will consider ADR when they begin their practice as attorneys. Through our mission of preparing prospective law students for success in law school, JumpStart to Law School has decided to organize the Annual Collegiate Alternative Dispute Resolution Competition.

Participation in this competition is free. There will be prizes which vary from season to season. Participating in this competition could be beneficial to the applications of community college students transferring to 4-year universities and to students applying to law schools. Experience in competitions such as these could demonstrate to admission officers how serious you are about your education.

JumpStart to Law School will provide all participating teams with details as to who their client is and what their needs are. Competitors will need to create a deal that meets their clients needs. Competing teams will also be sent detailed information regarding rules and regulations for the competition.

The winner of our competition will be the team that does best in advancing the interest of their "client." The team that is best at advancing their client's interest, making use of their tactics, adjusting to obstacles, demonstrating professionalism, and justifying their strategy to the judges will be named our competitions winner. Our competition is an incredible an opportunity for college students to put their ADR skills to the test and see where they rank among other college teams.

The ADR competition is available only to actively enrolled college students. College students looking to participate in our competition, may only sign up if you have an established partner - that is one other person competing with you.

One person from each team is all that is required to register your team for the competition. A total of 8 teams will compete, so there will be 16 total competitors. It is not required that the teams consist of students from the same school. If you have a partner from a different college, you are eligible to participate in the competition.

There may be multiple teams from the same school that participate in the competition. Again, all competitors must be actively enrolled college students. For those teams that sign up, JumpStart to Law School will send you resources via email to help you prepare you for the competition. However, you are free to prepare yourselves as you see fit. All teams will receive the same information from us, so please make sure your contact information is correct.

At a later date, JumpStart to Law School will ask for additional information from the teams to confirm their standing with their respective college. JumpStart to Law School reserves the right to dismiss any students from the competition who do not comply with the above mentioned requirements.

If you would like clarification or if you have any questions regarding the competition, please reach out to: admin@jumpstarttolawschool.com
