About Us

Legal Writing Done Right

JumpStart to Law School (JumpStart) is a 2-week program dedicated to inspiring students to pursue a career in the law, and providing the fundamentals students will need to be effective legal thinkers and writers to achieve success in law school. JumpStart focuses on legal writing. Our goal is not to teach substantive law. However, students will learn some black letter law as a byproduct of completing our assigned work.

The purpose of JumpStart is to teach students the essential writing skills needed for them to succeed in law school. During the first year of law school, most new law students will need to adjust to the level of writing that is demanded of them. To perform well in law school, students must be able to memorize black letter law, recall the law on exam day, and know how to write their knowledge in a way that makes it easy for professors to grade a student’s understanding. Regardless of one’s level of exposure to legal writing, all students must be able to perform the above-mentioned tasks before they could call themselves a Juris Doctor.

Unfortunately, not all students admitted to law school are similarly situated. Some students have been exposed to legal work, have completed legal work, or are familiar with the level of writing expected of lawyers. Regardless of your level of legal writing, JumpStart is committed to teaching writing skills in a way that will make its students feel prepared on the first day of law school.

Eliacin Velazquez

I earned Associates Degrees in Psychology and Behavioral Science from Los Medanos Community College in 2017. I transferred to the University of California - Davis, where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with a minor in Spanish-Latin American History in 2020. I attended California Western School of Law and graduated in 2024.

My career interests are in civil litigation and in intellectual property. While in law school, my favorite course subjects were Constitutional L aw and Torts.

As a co-founder of JumpStart to Law School, I devised our writing program to improve the gap in skill level among first generation law school students. Personally, I was not a natural legal writer, but I worked hard and learned what I needed to do be effective on exam day. Eventually, legal writing became my strength as a law student. I view our program as my way of sharing all that I learned.

I graduated from Arizona State University in 2019 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with a minor in Spanish. I attended California Western School of Law and graduated in 2024.

My career interests are in landlord-tenant law and in immigration. While in law school, my favorite course subjects were Immigration and Property.

As a co-founder of JumpStart to Law School, I started our program because I understand the importance of legal writing. I believe that legal writing is a skill that needs to be developed prior to law school. With our program, my goal is to help students develop this skill early on so that they can become successful in law school and in their career.
